Jeremiah 33:11 says, they shall be heard again the voice of joy, and the voice of gladness; the voice of those who sing as they bring sacrifices of thanksgiving into the house of the Lord. A mother’s love endures forever. A mother always has hope that things will go well with her children and holds on even when others have given up. Whether you are an unmarried woman or an expectant mother or a new mother, this testimony I pray will encourage you because with God all things are possible.
As a family, one of the things my husband and I agreed on was giving our children quality education. A lot of times, the schools that met our specifications were pretty expensive but to the glory of God we could afford them without too much stress or hassle.
My husband worked in a bank and he rose to the position of a General Manager, overseeing the whole of the East and the South-South so money was not really a problem at the time. By the time our kids were about finishing secondary school, we decided that they would all go to universities in America. Our first Son went off to America to start Pre-Med with the intention of studying Medicine thereafter.
Everything was going great for us but suddenly the bubble burst and my husband’s bank went under .It was like an egg had broken and we couldn’t put it all back together. Here we were, my first Son had gone to America; the second one of course was expectant because he was in SSS 3 and the third was in JSS 3. We didn’t want to move them. In our estimation and human understanding we thought two years maximum and we’ll be out of the woods.
Meanwhile, we started selling all our assets to foot our bills. My husband, God bless him; a resilient young man (he’s old now) decided that he was done with paid employment and wanted to venture out on his own. I was already in business and I could have preferred he took up another job but he believed the bank crash was in his favour. I was aghast and to my utter consternation he always thanked God; he would shout and say thank God the bank went under. I mean, I couldn’t understand all that.
We had a young business and growing children in high fee paying schools. It was not a very good combination from the human angle. After a while, when things were not going on as planned; we decided to confide in the children so that they could know the challenges and adjust accordingly.
When our first son completed his first degree and with the financial challenges in the family, I thought my son would change his mind from being a doctor. Getting admission into a medical school in America if you are not an American citizen is like a camel going through the needles eye; in fact, only 3% of foreigners get admitted. People told us it wasn’t possible but the boy was bent on studying medicine. Although I didn’t discourage him but like Mary, I didn’t know how this could be.
The cost of medical school alone made me realize that nothing short of a massive miracle could make this happen. Just as Jesus said in Luke 11:4; this sickness is not unto death but that God’s son would be glorified. That is exactly what happened. Our son is now a medical doctor, he is presently doing his residency in Detroit, America. Our second son has also graduated and is working in an Advertising company here in Lagos and the third has just graduated with honors also in the United States of America.
Our God is faithful and able. Hold on and the Lord who did it for us will also do yours for you. Praise the Lord.
